A new social media craze now going viral has been called the “Charlie Charlie Challenge.” It invites kids to summon a demon. Is it just a foolish game or a deadly snare?
The challenge is similar to the Ouija board. Players lay two pencils on top of each other to form a cross. In each of the four quadrants created, the words “Yes” and “No” are written kitty corner from each other. Then the person calls on the demon and asks a question. The top pencil then turns and points to a yes or no answer.
“The participants then summon what they
say is a Mexican demon called Charlie, attempting to ask him questions
for guidance for their lives. Some Twitter or Instagram users have said
they've come into contact with more than one demon, and experienced
other demonic activities such as hearing voices, things being moved, and
more.” [1]
It’s just an innocent game, right? Not according to the Bible. Even
if some or most videos are faked and accounts about contacting a demon
are made up, we should never attempt to fool around with the devil or
his fallen angels. Why? This is how Jesus describes him:
“You are of your father the devil, and the
desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the
beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in
him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a
liar and the father of it” (John 8:44).
From the moment he tempted Eve in the garden of Eden to turn away
from the Lord, the devil is intent on doing anything to draw us from the
source of truth and life. That’s why the Bible provides many clear
instructions on the occult.For instance, some people believe that if they observe a miracle, it must be from God. But the Bible says, “For they are spirits of demons, performing signs” (Revelation 16:14). In speaking of Satan in the last days, Scripture tells us, “He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men” (Revelation 13:13).
Perhaps the clearest warning in the entire Bible is found in this passage:
“There shall not be found among you anyone
who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who
practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a
sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or
one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an
abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your
God drives them out from before you” (Deuteronomy 18:10–12).
If you are searching for answers to your deepest questions about
life, relationships, or your future, don’t turn to a liar who wants to
destroy you. Search the Bible. It was inspired by a loving God who
